Vance grew up in Middletown, Ohio, and graduated from Yale Law School. The book is about growing up with a mother who struggled with addictions. His grandparents offered as much love and support as they could even though they were dealing with their own issues. His grandparents moved their family away from a poor community, Jackson, Kentucky, to raise their children in a middle-class society. The book is about the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty and trauma that cause continued struggles generations later.
